Diários de Viagem

Travel Journals

Elegant, useful, beautiful and nostalgic. Travel journals are great accessories for those who enjoy registering his memories and impressions. After all, as the saying states: recalling is living!

It’s like travelling: we rediscover the places from our past, we meet the people again, we remember the stories, we relive…

Types of journals there are many, some are specific from the cities we visit and have maps and info, but all suit the same purpose: remembrance! Sometimes we give little value to these things, we forget how important is a simple memory of the remarkable moments from our lives.

Acolhedora Lisboa: Primeiro Dia

Welcoming Lisbon: First Day

Portugal.
Portugal. It came by chance. As we were going to travel by TAP we decided to make it our first stop: why not to enjoy the opportunity to experience the country of our colonizers? It was our first big surprise: what seemed just interesting became a marvelous visit, Portugal is spectacular!

We built a short three-day tour between Lisbon and Sintra. We arrived at Lisbon near the sunrise and there at the airport we bought the Lisboa Card, a great acquisition: transportation included and discount (or no charge) for the main attractions.

Achamos o Hostel, guardamos as malas, e estávamos prontos para descobrir Lisboa.
We found the Hostel, tucked the luggage, and then we were ready to discover Lisbon.

We started in Belém, where by the Tejo River, we came into Discoveries Monument, a monument shaped as a caravel built to celebrate 500 years of the death of Henrique, the navigator. The monument was much bigger than we thought and impresses because of the detailed sculptures on the east and west faces that portray key characters from the navigation period. In front of the monument there is a big map with the Portuguese discoveries routes.

From there, we can see Belém Tower. The tower, an old fortress, marks the spot where the caravels departed. Be ready to walk up many stairs if you want to reach the top, the space is narrow and the staircase is spiraled, but it’s worth visiting! We were endowed with a panoramic view of the Tejo and Belém neighborhood.

Continuing our walk – yes, the entire tour in Belém is made on foot! – we passed through the beautiful Empire Square and arrived at Jerónimos Monastery. The place enchants by the architecture from the outside already, the church is dark but is very beautiful; we found the tombs of Luís de Camões and Vasco da Gama; and inside the monastery we saw Fernando Pessoa’s tomb. We walked around the cloister, appreciated the garden and visited an exposition in one of the rooms.

Going to Belém and not relishing the famous cakes named after the district would be heretical. From the monastery we walked one more block and arrived at the old factory of Belém Cakes where nowadays exists a restaurant that looks like a big labyrinth with tables filled with this delicious sweet. The tables are very crowded, so if you prefer buy the cakes on the counter at the entrance and you’ll be transported to the ancient Portuguese neighborhood bakeries.

We decided to cross the town and visit Park of the Nations. The park is a revitalized area where formerly occurred Expo 98. We took the cable car and walked through Garcia de Orta Gardens and along the various bars and restaurants, where you can rest, eat and drink a little.

To finish our first day, we passed by Vasco da Gama Shopping Center – inside Parque das Nações – we did some shopping and came to Hostel tired, but happy after a day full of small pleasures.

Europa: Hora de Planejar!

Europe: Time to Plan!

It was hard to choose, but in the end we reached an accord: twenty days between September and October traveling through Portugal, Spain, England, France and the Netherlands.

After taking a final decision on the itinerary, the first misfortune came up: the trio becomes a duo. But we had to continue anyway. It’s funny that nowadays, when we look back, we’re able to see the positive side of things, but this is a story we’ll tell in another moment…

Moving on, it was time to plan! We can say, in passing, that it’s a super pleasant moment for us. Literally, we travel without moving.

Four months of research in guides, magazines, web sites and blogs.

Quatro meses levantando custos, afinal, sonhos custam dinheiro, né?
Four months calculating costs, after all, dreams cost money, right?

Lots of toing and froing, of turning and overturning, nights with meetings that went through the dawn to build our day-to-day itinerary. For many times so involved we were that we wondered: where are we going now? It was as if we were there already.

Passagens compradas. Albergues e hotéis reservados. Cidades, atrações e passeios definidos. Tudo certo pra viajar! E nossas férias ficaram assim:
Flight and train tickets bought. Hostels and Hotels reserved. Cities, attractions and tours decided. All set to travel. And our vacation ended up like this:

Portugal: Lisboa e Sintra, 3 dias. Espanha: Madri, 3 dias. Inglaterra: Londres e Stonehenge, 6 dias. França: Paris, 5 dias. Holanda: Amsterdã e Zaanse Schans, 3 Dias.
Portugal: Lisbon and Sintra, 3 days. Spain: Madrid, 3 days. England: London and Stonehenge, 6 days. France: Paris, 5 days. The Netherlands: Amsterdam and Zaanse Schans, 3 days.

Europa: Onde Tudo Começa...

Europe: Where Everything Starts...

Who has never dreamed of knowing new countries and cultures? Knowing those places we have heard of in our history classes or have seen on magazines or movies? Big stages... outstanding stories sceneries... beautiful landscapes...

Sometimes it’s difficult to know where everything begins, but one thing is for sure: it begins! At first the desire comes, it arrives without announcing. With us it was also like this! One intended to attend an exchange program in Europe, the others only intended to travel around. One word leads to another, then someone points: “we could meet one another there”, “good idea!”.

Pronto, o desejo virou sonho e o sonho começou a tomar forma.
That’s it, the desire became dream and the dream started taking shape. The reverie and debate season was open: when to go, how much time to stay, how much it’s gonna cost and the major one, which countries to visit?
